Talks on ways to improve the US immigration system are relentlessly being pushed by multi-sectoral groups including immigrant activists, the Democrats and the congress. The controversial issue on US immigration reform has reached nationwide exposure long before but most especially in the first few months of the Obama administration and up to this point. This is due to the fact that President Barack Obama has strongly supported immigration reform and has even included this on his campaign plot. It has been a major advantage ethnic groups saw and ultimately got them to vote for him.
Right now, there are many people who feel that the government’s effort to fix the immigration system is not enough. There are so many aspects that should be addressed now, not tomorrow but now. On one side of the story, is it sufficient to say that ethnic immigrant groups feel ignored in spite of the all-out cry for immigration reform? Asian immigration problems are a good point to start.
A general notion of immigration problems often revolve around the plight of illegal immigrants that are either Latinos or Mexicans. It’s perhaps attributed to media that stories normally focus on these groups of people, suffice it to say that it maybe caused by the much higher population of Latino and Mexican people in the US which results to such attention. Mexican immigration began way ahead of time of Asians while Latino immigration is not far behind.
These scenarios leave Asian immigration issues not given the equal importance, at least to most Asian American immigrants. This group also has their own share of problems with how the immigration system works. They are also fighting for immigration reform. Asian immigration problems should also be heard and taken seriously.
Separation from family members is one of the Asian immigration problems that have not been resolved until now. Years of not being with loved ones are a disheartening situation to be in. Many Asian immigrants who turned US citizens or permanent residents hope to be reunited with spouses, children, parents and siblings but it is not an easy process to do. They need to count many years before this dream can be granted.
Asian American immigrants are doing very well in the US. As a matter of fact, they hold good employment positions, they blend really well with other people and they are contributing to the society. A common problem they have is, they have to divide their monetary resources between their US household and that of their loved ones’. Money that should have been flowing within the US is remitted to Asian countries instead. It greatly affects the value of the US money, while benefiting those of the recipient countries.
Also, employment that could have been taken permanently by an Asian immigrant but this is turned down because he needs to go and visit a loved one every year or so. Thus, a long term job commitment is hard to take. The downside is that companies need to rehire new employees, train new employees every so often. This takes away precious operational cost and affects the economy in the long run.
The pattern of life is disrupted with this kind of immigration system Asians are dealing with. Emotionally, this is a major burden Asian immigrants need to carry. All in spite of economically helping the US, in spite of paying taxes in time and in spite of being a law abiding US citizen or permanent resident.
Until the immigration system is fixed, Asian American immigrants will have to face trying times without a loved one beside them. If the government is dead serious in giving immigration an overhaul, it better start with those who are patiently waiting for a family petition to be approved.
