Dubbed as the first of its kind event, Asian immigrant organizations will meet at the Korean American Resource and Cultural Center in Chicago this Saturday for a public expression of their views on immigration reform. A large number Asian and Pacific Islander immigrant crowd are expected to attend this momentous event, according to Chicago Tribune.
Immigration problems are common to ethnic immigrant groups in the US with grievances on the long visa application time families have to wait in order to be reunited with each other. The long wait is due to the backlog of immigrant petition applications especially in Asian countries.
In the Philippines for example, visa waiting time for a petition filed by a legal permanent resident to his/her spouse takes five years before it can be processed. On the other hand, a US citizen petition for sibling takes 20 years or so. Many families suffer from hardships of being separated with loved ones.
Asian groups are beginning to be vocal on their expression about their concerns and appeal for a comprehensive immigration reform. This is the only chance available for the immigration system to be fixed. Thousands of families will continue to be divided because of the current broken immigration process.
