Comprehensive Immigration Reform Champion Kennedy Leaves Leadership Gap

The passing of Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy saddened a lot of his immigration supporters. The late senator has been in the forefront of comprehensive immigration reform for the last 40 years he has served in the government.

He began his efforts to repair the immigration system with his active call on immigration reform in 1962. He took a great part in the passing of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. He cosponsored the Dream Act that legalized undocumented students in the US, among many others. Many efforts of Senator Ted Kennedy were aimed to giving fair treatment of all immigrants.

A more recent endeavor followed with the comprehensive immigration reform bill he co-authored in 2007. He joined Arizona Republican Senator John McCain in pushing the comprehensive immigration bill. The bill was met with a lot of attacks which resulted in its ultimate loss.

Senator Ted Kennedy’s demise is not the end of the journey towards the immigration reform . There will be avenues wherein his views about the immigration system will lay the path for other politicians to carve out their own “immigration reform models” based on what he has already contributed.
