Immigration reform is the much talked about topic nowadays aside from the Health Care Bill. Immigration supporters, advocates and activists are out to voice their concerns about long needed immigration reform in the country. It’s about time that a comprehensive reform is put forward, hopefully a fruitful, open discussion will transpire in order to fix the immigration system of the country.
Issues typically surround the rising numbers of illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants are forced to stay undocumented in order to survive life in the country. For these people, they find it hard to wait at the end of the line to legally enter the US so they resort to overstaying and violating the immigration policies. The wave of illegal immigrants has significantly hurt the economy of the country in many ways. This prompts many groups to support bills which will deport illegal immigrants to their native country. Some are even opposing the acceptance of many more immigrants in the country as a means to control the current immigration situation.
What about the legal immigrants who are living here and are productively contributing to the society? Not much stories are given to these people. Their stories should be brought out in the open for other foreign nationals to learn from and emulate the good things out of their actions.
There are a number of immigrants who became successful here in the US in their own rights. They went through the easy or difficult way of adjusting life in a foreign country but they managed to embrace it whole heartedly and created productive lives here. Most of these people are either in the media, politics, arts, business and sports. Some of these famous people include Jerry Yang, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Madeleine Albright , Michael J Fox , Anthony Hopkins .
Jerry Yang and his brother were brought to California by his mother from Taiwan. He attended Stanford University where he finished his BS and MS in Electrical Engineering. While on his Ph. D studies, he and David Filo, a fellow classmate, created what the world will soon know to be Yahoo! a powerful website portal. Jerry Yang is now a director of Cisco Systems, Inc. and Yahoo! Japan. He is also a trustee at Stanford University.
The Austrian born bodybuilding star, Arnold Schwarzenegger , received his US citizenship in 1983. His career in bodybuilding opened doors of Hollywood opportunities by starring in numerous box office films. Arnold Schwarzenegger is also a business man with Planet Hollywood as one of his more popular business ventures together with other celebrities. He is currently the Governor of the state of California serving his second term.
Madeleine Albright was born in Czechoslovakia and spent her childhood in Prague and in other surrounding cities. She is the first woman to become United States Secretary of State serving from 1997 to 2001. The experiences of Madeleine Albright with her family during the World War II have reflected on the kind of government policies she supported during her active service in the government by advocating democracy and human rights among many others.
Michael J Fox was born in Canada but his passion for acting led him to Los Angeles, California. He starred in television shows and movies which gave recognition to his acting abilities. Michael J Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1991. He has put up Michael J Fox Foundation to support his Parkinson’s research advocacy. He is a holder of Canadian-US citizenship.
The 1990’s Hannibal role made Anthony Hopkins famous along with other movies he has made since starting his film career. Anthony Hopkins starred as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Red Dragon, respectively. He was born in Wales and acquired his naturalized US citizenship on 2000.
