An immigration status is not limited to people who are petitioned by their family members, by their employers or acquired through studies. An immigrant status also comes in the form of Temporary Protection Status (TPS) which is created with a specific humanitarian reason.
TPS is given to qualified foreign nationals of designated countries. According to US Citizenship and Immigration Services official website, TPS is given to aliens currently in the United States and are temporarily unable to go back to their native country due to continuing armed conflict, an environmental disaster or other extraordinary and temporary conditions.
A foreign national given TPS should not expect that this will result to him/her having a permanent status. During the TPS designation, the national may acquire other status and this will be his/her status once the TPS is terminated. In some cases that the alien has a prior status before TPS, upon TPS termination, his/her prior status will be reverted. If the alien has no prior status before TPS and was not able to apply for other status while under TPS, once the TPS is terminated, he/she will go back to having an unlawful status.
Some of the countries (or parts thereof) currently designated for TPS includes El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Somalia and Sudan.
