List of US Immigration Categories

US immigration categories are the detailed representation of the different immigration types. These are the permanent and temporary categories available:

1. Immigrant Visas – for permanent lawful residency or green card application

2. Family Based Immigration – immigration of a US citizen or lawful permanent resident to a family member

a. Immediate relatives – spouses of US citizens, unmarried children under 21 years of age and parents
b. First preference – unmarried children over 21 years of age of US citizens
c. Second preference – spouses and children of lawful permanent resident
i. unmarried children over 21 years of age
d. Third preference – married children of US citizens
e. Fourth preference – siblings of US citizens

3. Employment Based Immigration
a. First Preference – persons of extraordinary ability, outstanding professors or researchers and multinational executives
b. Second Preference – persons with advanced degrees or exceptional ability
c. Third Preference – professionals, skilled workers and others workers
d. Fourth Preference – persons belonging to religious organization
e. Fifth Preference – employment creation investors

4. Visitors – the purpose of a person’s stay is purely for visit. It could be a visit to relatives or friends or a short-term business obligation in the US.

5. Students – people who are enrolled in educational programs are granted a temporary stay in the US given that they have valid student visas and should be renewed as deemed necessary
