Reuniting Families Act – 2009

There is a new bill introduced in the US Congress by Sen. Michael Honda of California entitled Reuniting Families Act. This bill, if enacted, will reform America’s family-based immigration system to end lengthy separations of loved ones, promote family stability and foster the economic growth that immigrant families have provided throughout the history of US. Some of the provisions of the bill are as follows:

1. Authorize the use of family-based and employment-based visas previously allocated by Congress which remain unused.
2. Allow current and future green card holders to reunite with their spouses and minor children immediately, rather than wait many years.
3. Increase the percentage of people from any country who may be given green cards each year.
4. Allow orphans, widows and widowers whose parent or spouse dies before the immigration process is completed to become legal residents.
5. Recognize the sacrifices that certain World War II Filipino veterans made for the US by allowing their children to become legal residents regardless of any numerical limits that apply to the Philippines.

There is a similar bill pending at the senate, introduced in the Senate by Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey.

This is good news to all legal immigrants who came to the US legally and played by the rules but is separated from their loved ones because of a currently broken immigration system in the US.
