There have been a steady flow of immigrants entering the United States of America year after year and this is shown in statistical reports published by government agencies. Many of these immigrants acquire permanent residency while living in the US as foreign students, workers or refugees or as foreign nationals who applied in the consular office of the Department of State in their native country. Most of these immigrants have pursued the naturalization process from day one of their entry in the US by meeting all the necessary requirements set forth in the Immigration and Nationality Act.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Immigration Services Annual Flow Report of March 2009, there have been a record number of 1,046,539 permanent residents naturalized in the US. Of this number, the leading countries of birth of new citizens came from Mexico with 231,815, India with 65,971, the Philippines with 58,972, the People’s Republic of China with 40,017 and Cuba with 39,871. This number has been attributed with the large volume of naturalization applicants received in 2007.
Immigrants seek to be legally naturalized for the many benefits citizenship will bring to their lives. For one, US citizens are able to express their right to vote in Federal elections. Many people feel that having the right to vote is their way to contribute to the welfare of their society. In the same way, a US citizen may seek to become an elected official. Being able to choose the right leaders and be an elected official is both very overwhelming and empowering for a lot of citizens in the country.
Being a US citizen also provides opportunities to work in government agencies which are not possible for permanent residents. Most jobs available in government agencies require US citizenship. When working or traveling overseas, a US citizen is guaranteed government assistance whenever deemed necessary. This gives every US citizen the security they will require when fulfilling a mission abroad or even while enjoying a leisurely trip. Aside from these, a US citizen is also given the benefit of petitioning family members living outside the US. Unlike permanent residents, US citizens may bring their married children, siblings and parents to immigrate to the US.
These benefits are just some of the significant ones that are readily enjoyed by US citizens. Many other benefits are being enjoyed by US citizens. As a result, this brings in more eligible permanent residents to apply for citizenship.
