US Plans to Centralize Immigration Detention

According to the Los Angeles Times, the Obama administration announced plans to overhaul the nation’s immigration detention system into a centralized one designed specifically for civil detainees.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement Assistant Secretary John Morton says that with these reforms, ICE will move away from their present, decentralized jail oriented approach and move to a system that is wholly designed for and based on civilian detention needs.

Once implemented, this will provide for a more appropriate environment for illegal immigrant detainees, some of which are mistakenly identified. These people who were mistakenly identified could spend days in prisons while they wait for their records to be verified.

Immigrant rights advocates welcomed the changes but said there was still no clear policy on how detention facilities would be penalized if problems were found.
